This study shows no effect of opposing premarital sex on whether young women have sex before marriage.
At the same time, once sexually active, only about half of women report feeling less opposed to premarital sex.
Why do almost half of women still oppose premarital sex despite having it?
Women may feel they made a one-time exception to their beliefs. They may have had unwanted sex. They may feel cognitive dissonance about having sex.
Do attitudes inform behavior: Is that a chick-and-egg question? Here's a new study that tackles this question with young women's premarital sex as a case in point: journals.sagepub.com/doi/ful…
GSS surveys for decades have shown that people's opposition to premarital sex declines with age, implying that people approve premarital sex once they have it.
Do the 40% of young women aged 18-22 who oppose premarital sex actually avoid having premarital sex? The answer - which is NO - might not surprise you.
New open access paper alert: Using .@ipums CDOH (cdoh.ipums.org/) linked to .@NCHATstudy, we found that discrimination was more common for transgender and non-binary respondents (90% reporting) than cis-gender non-hetero and hetero respondents. link.springer.com/article/10…
Many (campaigns, activists, media personalities) have adopted a 2024 strategy that declares "democracy is on the ballot." But does this message persuade voters? In a new paper with @walk_erin, @d_e_holliday and @ylelkes we find effects are countervailing and not durable.
It might feel good to shame the other side, but it isn't very effective and risks inflaming partisan tensions.
