🏆Our 2024 MES Photography Prize went to to Shonara Awad @okstate Hanan Awad, whose series captures the militarization of everyday life in the Israeli-occupied al-Khalil/Hebron for Palestinians, especially poignantly in the case of children trying to get to school #FreePalestine
🏆 We also awarded an honorable mention for the 2024 MES Student Paper prize to Leen Alfatafta @GWtweets for "Motherly Affects," which examines how mothering/hood emerges as a 'relationally dispossessive' in @Imanmersal's *How to Mend: Motherhood and Its Ghosts* 🎉🎊
🏆 The 2024 MES Student Paper Award goes to @ThayerHastings, from @GCcunyAnthro (#FreeCUNY!) for “The Inheritances of Non-Citizenship: Immobility and the Family in the Bir Ona Borderland," about the problem of statelessness & non-citizenship among 🇵🇸residents of Jerusalem. 🎉🎊
🏆 we revamped our distinguished scholar award to a Distinguished Service Prize, to acknowledge the invisible labor that goes into creating community and institutions
and our winner is Zeina Zaatari, Director of the Arab American Cultural Center (@ArabAmCC) @thisisUIC
we honor Dr. Zaatari for for her generous and visionary service to ME anthro: her institution-building at a time of emergency, her teaching and training of scholars through workshops and public events, and her pathbreaking scholarship on women’s activism in South Lebanon.
