Debuted in @compactmag today. Last year, I got kicked out of a fellowship over my faith. This is the story of that affair. But It is bigger than me. I hope I did some measure of justice to it.
Thanks to @matthewschmitz for handling the piece well.

If you claim to be a critic, but refuse to apply critical thinking to the Bible and your religion, then your criticism is selective, not intellectual. Real criticism should examine everything, including sacred texts, with the same standards of logic, evidence, and scrutiny.
Calling queer people’s concerns “identity politics” while treating anti-gay beliefs as neutral intellectual positions is disingenuous. Art being “Encompassing” cannot mean queer people must quietly accommodate beliefs that have historically been used to justify harm against us.
It’s disgustingly stupid to kick someone out of a fellowship over their faith. It’s a bad precedent for other rackets under the guise of identity politics to cudgel our literary ecosystem into a kind of singularity—political or religious. Art should be encompassing, regardless.
What is logical about tolerating intolerant views?
Also they weren’t kicked out. They have a right to not want to associate with someone that agrees with a book that promotes harm to them.
Nigerians in Nigeria don’t realize that duty of care is a serious thing.
Last year, I applied for a comms. fellowship. The organizers noticed I had worked at Exxon & asked about my views on fossil fuels cuz there were anti–fossil fuel activists in the cohort.
Every time a writer goes into a queerphobic drivel, there is a Nigerian writer ready and available to call it "well written" or something else like that.
We really do defend any rubbish and across every class, gender, etcetera. 😭😭
Homophobia affects real people. Homophobia kills. Homophobia has taken real life humans from their loved ones. It is not a difference in opinion. It is real danger. Get out of my sight
Homophobia is NOT an ideology to debate on. People die because of it. So do not ask/expect queer people and/or allies to accommodate a bigot in ANY capacity because of his skill. Y'all just want to hate and get away with it.
