Não era o arranque que queríamos, mas isto está longe de ter acabado. Cabeça levantada e foco no próximo jogo.

We already know the agenda tonight. If Portugal struggle, the headlines will be: "Cristiano Ronaldo shouldn't be starting." Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha and João Neves can drop below-average performances and somehow escape the same level of scrutiny. For years we've heard Ronaldo shouldn't be in the XI, yet he's still the one everyone talks about after every game. The standards are clearly different.

Vitinha isn't turning up, no progressive play from him. He's just spamming possession.

Ronaldo's GOAT case isn't built solely on goals, records, or trophies. What is undeniable is his influence. Few athletes in history have inspired as many people to take fitness, discipline, self-belief, and hard work seriously. Whether you think he's the GOAT or not, his impact on football and on an entire generation of fans and players is impossible to ignore.
There’s absolutely no problem with Ronaldo having fans, loving Ronaldo or even Ronaldo being your favorite of all time, he is bloody CRISTIANO RONALDO!!! Problems only start when you think he’s the GOAT of football which is factually wrong.

This is not an isolated incident, it is a pattern that has followed this man across the last 2 tournaments and the people paid to analyze this game are too compromised by admiration to call it honestly. They carefully chose the word "lucky" to soften favoritism. Studs up, no chance of winning the ball, on a player's Achilles. That is not luck. That is protection. And when protection happens consistently, across multiple tournaments, for one specific player, luck stops being the right word. The integrity of the sport has a Messi shaped blind spot and nobody in mainstream media has the courage to say it directly.
As brilliant and utterly irrepressible as Lionel Messi is, there have been a few occasions during his illustrious career when opponents — and certainly opposition fans — have suggested that he has received “special treatment” from referees. What is certain is that, between scoring his first and second goals against Algeria, he got lucky. A challenge on Algeria captain Aissa Mandi, who was caught by Messi on his right calf and Achilles tendon, could have earned at least a yellow card — and plausibly a red card — but Polish referee Szymon Marciniak was content to award a free kick. It was a strange incident. Mandi was in control of the ball, going nowhere fast, and there was little prospect of dispossessing him from Messi’s position. To make a lunge like that, with his studs up, seemed incomprehensible, never mind dangerous. Special treatment? At the very least it was lenient refereeing. A yellow card would perhaps have been the most widely expected outcome — a red card second — but Messi was certainly lucky to get away scot-free. ✍️ @OliverKay FREE TO READ: nyti.ms/4vVqN2V
