New paper out in Alzheimer's & Dementia 🧠 We combined resting-state pupillometry-fMRI, neuromelanin MRI of the locus coeruleus, and cognitive testing in 64 people with Alzheimer's and 26 controls to ask how arousal shapes cortical dynamics in AD. 🧵

Footballers remembering they're allowed to lift the ball over the goalie again... My beloved sport is still alive. There's always space for a chipped finish.

Pupil-linked arousal tracked synchrony in real time. A weakened arousal system may flatten the brain’s dynamical landscape, raising the possibility that arousal-modulating treatments will be effective treatments. @michaelcbdavid Open access: doi.org/10.1002/alz.71547

Why does Alzheimer’s disease cause problems with attention? Attention falters early in AD. Our new paper points to the brain’s arousal system: as the locus coeruleus degenerates, cortical synchrony drops and the brain can’t hold the states attention needs.

We frame this as an attractor landscape: healthy arousal deepens the dominant high-synchrony state. In AD, attenuated LC-noradrenergic arousal flattens the landscape, destabilising dynamics and pushing the brain away from criticality — with consequences for cognition.

Hey nerds, the gorgeous ITV World Cup titles were shot on genuine 16mm intercut with old highlights shot on genuine film (Where applicable). Sorry, I'm just a big film nerd. Probably the first time genuine film has been used in British television in well over a decade.
OH MY WORD!!! ITV HAVE SMASHED IT BETTER OR JUST AS GOOD AS 2014😍

Headbutts, spitting, diving, biting, crying, cheating and thieving... it’s all happened at some point in the past 96 years. These are the World Cup’s maddest moments. In order of derangement. 📝 @TimSpiers FREE READ 🔗 bit.ly/4o9dzgb

No Maguire, no Hall, no Trent & no Wharton is where I'm lost for answers, they just seem such obvious picks for depth & different dynamics. Hall - different ball at feet LB to NOR, technical first / over-lapper to work with Gordon/Rashford Trent - game breaking FB just better alternative to any other RB bar James Maguire - fit, good, great season, monster in both boxes, leadership, played in a final, 'character' & still GOOD Wharton - completely different to mainoo / rice, splits lines, can accelerate everything through the thirds & will be even better pushed up as a 8 vs low blocks when we struggle to break them through outside

Doesn't want wing-fielders in the squad, he wants balance. Under Tuchel we've seen him use a basic 4-3-3 which just forms two wide triangles, a base of 3 build-up players & 1 sitter to anchor. Feels like he's aimed for natural width-holders, natural 8s and nothing in-between that will disrupt the balance of the midfield and width. Seems like he's favoured versatility defensively to cover across positions and then natural wide players & different dynamic of 10s [Rogers Jude]. Not over the moon with the squad, I think there's some poor decisions esp in the second string / depth but I sort of understand.
🚨 Thomas Tuchel on Foden, Palmer and Gibbs-White out: “There were difficult phone calls. For some of them, it’s just a positional thing to have a balanced squad so we don’t bring FIVE number tens”. “Even if it was painful, I think it was the right call for England”.
