Last Sunday I was walking in Central ferry piers in Hong Kong 🇭🇰 and a Young guy ~15-17 yo came close to me and said “what’s up my Nigger” and then ran away…! Was not affected at all but really surprised by the risk he took coz someone else will react differently!
new paper in Evolutionary Ecology by @micheldongmo - habitat and plasticity of thermal tolerance in tropical Bicyclus butterflies - thrilled to see it out, a lot of interesting results packed into this one link.springer.com/article/10…
Please RT. We are hiring domestic/international #PhD students to work on citizen science, insect migration/conservation at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. If interested, please email me. You can find more about our research interests here. shawanchowdhury.com.
Our paper led by #MikeBoyle and published in @NatRevBiodiv investigated the causes and consequences of insects' decline in the tropics. Please take a look.

Heartbreaking to see the level of destruction in Gaza as friends find their homes reduced to rubble. There is nowhere to live and nowhere to go. Everything they had is gone. The ground is a graveyard
Light pollution is creating novel photoperiods for organisms to navigate, with consequences for circadian timing. But will these impacts be distributed evenly across the globe? 🧐
Our preprint describes a new biogeographic theory ~!

Dr Michael Boyle, Dr Adam Sharp, @Lou_A_Ashton@bonebraking@HKUSBS show reduced abundance of undescribed beetle species in logged Borneo rainforests. Unknown tropical insect biodiversity appears less resilient to human-induced environmental change. authors.elsevier.com/a/1jdIk…
I travelled through Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands and the Northern half of France this Summer. In many places I got horrified by the lack of #biodiversity, not finding one single #Bumblebee or #Butterfly on the resting areas along the highways. But… 1/6
Always happy to be part of such collaborative work! We brainstormed on Tropical cities as windows into the ecosystems of our present and future; under the leadership of @bonebrakingonlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
Every year HKU undergrads take part in Understanding Tropical Ecosystems in a Changing World field course. For two weeks students learn how to do fieldwork in a global biodiversity hotspot – the rainforest of Danum Valley in Malaysia, side by side with elephants and orangutans.
with @micheldongmo I'm happy to have added Cameroonian data to this cool dataset of airborne global fungi DNA - 27,954 species-level OTUs! nature.com/articles/s41597-0…
New paper! @PauDyssey used climatic and ecophysiology data to project activity restriction under warming for a diurnal and nocturnal lizard in S Africa - now out in @Ecol_Evolonlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
Assistant Professor/ Associate Professor/ Professor positions on ecology & biodiversity broadly at @HKUniversity . Great place to study tropical biodiversity (but not limited to it). Pls join us!! jobs.hku.hk/en/job/526098/as…
For all people who struggle with academic writing, Loisa Lagisz and I share our experiences and secrets, which helped 50 students publish their first papers. Please share with your colleagues!
