UGANDA’S FY2026/27 BUDGET SIGNALS A STRONGER COMMITMENT TO INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP. The Government of Uganda has allocated UGX 1.140 trillion to Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), ICT, and the creative industries in the FY2026/27 budget a significant signal that innovation is increasingly being recognized as a key driver of economic transformation as Uganda gears up for a#10FoldGrowth leap of growing the economy to USD 500 Billion by 2040 The budget priorities include the commercialization of local innovations, increased investment in research and development, establishment of a Hi-Tech City, expansion of digital infrastructure, and growth of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) opportunities. For the entrepreneurship ecosystem, this presents exciting opportunities. ✅ Greater support for innovation commercialization could help more startups move from prototype to market-ready businesses. ✅ Increased investment in research and development creates a stronger foundation for deep-tech, health-tech, agritech, and other innovation-driven ventures. ✅ Improved digital infrastructure can lower barriers to market access, enhance connectivity, and enable entrepreneurs to reach customers more efficiently. ✅ The planned Hi-Tech City has the potential to strengthen collaboration between innovators, researchers, investors, and industry players. ✅ Growth in the BPO sector could unlock new employment opportunities for young people while creating demand for digital skills and technology-enabled businesses. As Uganda continues to invest in innovation-led development, collaboration between government, academia, startups, investors, and ecosystem enablers will be critical to translating these commitments into tangible impact.
