Masochism is a key psychoanalytic concept
One form is victim entitlement—insistence one is entitled to special compensation in proportion to suffering & victimhood. Thus the need *to amplify suffering* in all ways
Without treatment, suffering & victimhood becomes a way of life
The concept is not blaming. It is a question of how one can be responsible for creating a meaningful life despite the obscenities of living they find themselves in, out of their control. Only affirming a lack of autonomy is going to lead to more anxiety and depression.
“Show me the incentive and I will show you the outcome”
(I had to read an awful lot of psychotherapy outcome research to really appreciate the truth of this quotation)
"People who spent money to buy themselves time reported greater overall life satisfaction...If there’s some task that just thinking about it fills you with dread, then it’s probably worth considering whether you can afford to buy your way out of it" nytimes.com/2017/07/27/scien…
"overproduction of PhDs has left a highly educated class with spare time and cultural capital to express their grievances...risks of keeping too many aspiring professionals frustrated..buying off some literati can be cheaper than quelling their rebellions" foreignpolicy.com/2021/07/16…
I quit my teaching job and now make more bartending for 15 less hours week. Also I get blamed for way way less and get told thank you way way more. No lesson plans or grading papers.
Remember this when people ask about the teacher shortage.
