i guess let me clarify OVERTLY that “good, bad, or neutral” obviously does not include racist portrayals of any characters in the gcu 😭 and in fact this post was in response to the goofy “hayden should always be dragged in fic” takes and not in relation to discourse on JJ at all
characterization discourse killing me again lmao i’m gonna write hayden and jj and scott and whoever else as either good, bad, or neutral in a fic depending on their narrative purpose and i really don’t give af how y’all feel about their canon counterparts. that’s fanfic baby!

hey so that’s acknowledged in my replies, even tho it’s not the real issue i was getting at in my tweet, which is that hr fans overtly police characterization by many “canon” dimensions. and as an asian, i am well aware of how issues of race exist in this fandom i promise u that
This would be fine if race could also exist in a vacuum but everytime a fanfic writer turns a canonically non-bigoted character into an ^aggressive^ raging homophobe its choosing to perpetuate awful racist stereotypes and we have every right to drag folks for it.

some of y’all write shane in ways u think are innocuous but that i find awkward at best and a straight up caricature of his race at worst… so i get it. it’s a complex thing. still, earnest attempts at character work are not the same as “omega shane smells like mango sticky rice”

in the same vein, making jj initially more homophobic than in canon in a way that creates realistic complexity and earned emotional development and payoff within his and shane’s friendship is not the same as the rightfully criticized fics where he is overtly dehumanized

The best and funniest because he just came sliding literally out of nowhere 😭😭

What's the greatest defensive play you've ever seen? Myles Garrett is the early favorite to repeat as the NFL DPOY, via Kalshi odds.

recommend old fics (whatever “old” means to you, i promise they’ll still feel fresh to a new reader)! and comment/kudos too! it’s not weird to do so and idk where that idea came from amongst readers tbh. we finish our fics and leave them in an archive for a reason lol
my contribution to the fic writer discussion is that i wish there was more love for fic long after its initially posted. im always so grateful when i post a fic and it gets immediate attention but after that first week it feels like it just kind of disappears into the ether

i do think “fic writers only write for themselves” is a little reductive and can make readers feel no obligation to interact. like yes, it’s for me in the sense that i pick the stories i want to tell but in most cases it IS with the intention of having people to tell the story to
If one more person tells me to write for myself I’m gonna crash out. And by crash out I mean I’m gonna write a whole ass essay about why that’s fake af and make every person who says that read the whole thing.

also i don’t love op saying “it’s fake” to just write for yourself (my original fiction drafts beg to differ lol), but like… the response from folks saying “well I DO and idc AT ALL if anyone sees my stuff ever” is a little strange (and cope tbh) when u do publish it online tho

and making people feel bad for not “loving the act of writing enough” for caring about engagement a little is loser behavior to me

“if you write hayden as a good friend, you’re supporting—“ i’m not doing anything actually bc he’s not real. i’ll write him as a sea cucumber if i want and you can filter that out as you see fit

and once again all these definitive “hate xyz choice in fic” takes are really not doing anything to motivate writers to produce the work u want lol. if u like fic where shane has zero canon friends around or a specific set of approved-by-you friends, there IS a solution …🖊️

it would be v disingenuous of me to say that i don’t love getting comments, especially on WIPs, even if i’m a writer who is quite self-motivated and has never abandoned a work. it feels good to know people like ur stuff. it makes me want to write more stuff, more quickly. simple!
