Married Hollanov is my fav! We don’t have as many romance stories about established couples. Both of these are married Hollanov: archiveofourown.org/works/84… - smut relationship study abt Shane & Ilya’s conflicted feelings abt being out archiveofourown.org/works/85… - silly CNC smut ;)

what i love read the most about is…married Hollanov, I don’t care what the fic is about — jealous Ilya, kinky sex, crazy roleplay, them being soft, honeymoon, arguing, doing nothing, doing everything. the fact that it’s them being married in the fic is what makes me so happy

People really think when you complain about lack of engagement, it means you don’t write for yourself. Guys, if I didn’t write for myself, I wouldn’t be putting hours and days and strict accurate research plans into this fanfic. I have FUN planning this shit out but
I would like to be more clear about my stance on "write for yourself" and why I think it's terrible advice to people who are in pain over their fanworks being ignored by the fandom 🧵 (Also anything here can equally apply to art/artists, just mentally switch out the words) So--

Now I’ve got BNF authors criticizing me on here. I made myself vulnerable to ask for advice. If you look through my replies, you’ll see me owning my mistakes, expressing gratitude for the readership I do have, and thanking ppl for their advice. Can yall just leave me alone?

"Writers shouldn't be looking for engagement" does piss me off as a tradpub author. Like no...we share fics for community and tradpub for money. Engagement is a requirement of community. Fic isn't built to market the same way tradpub is but it's still a call for community.

i wanted to add to this because of the “write for you” discourse today the thing is, most writers DO write for themselves, i know i do. but we PUBLISH to platforms like ao3 for the community. we don’t publish for ourselves, that’s for other fans.
this ravenous consumption without community is also why authors are leaving the fanbase lol you can only write so fast and create so much, and when people don’t care about you or your work outside of the speed they can consume it, it ends up draining your passion to write

I’ve been writing longfic for ages. I’ve had several popular ones, dating back to 2013. Same writer. Similar quality (I won’t claim they’re all bangers). Comments, kudos, bookmarks declined over time… but fell off a CLIFF in 2022. If you want longfic, actually engage with it.

I may or may not write a (calmer) version of why I dislike the “write for yourself” advice. But I wanted to say thank you to all of you who took the time to commiserate, offer advice, encourage, and gently push back. I did NOT expect that post to blow up overnight, and I’m

Overwhelmed by the response. Stories are a sacred thing to me, and I am so grateful for the community of like-minded creatives I’ve found in fandom spaces. All day at work I’m around people who don’t love reading & writing. It’s lovely to spend my free time with people who do.

The gap between the story in your head and the response it gets is one of the loneliest places a writer can sit. But here's what that feeling actually means, you had a vision big enough to disappoint you. That's not delusion, that's ambition.

What I'm seeing on my feed from this is there are 3 types of people 1) vulnerable people who admit they love the craft, but also would like their props 2) IDGAF-ers who only post for themselves 3) assholes who are taking an honest question and needing to feel superior 🤷
This is dumb and vulnerable and I may regret asking and delete, but here goes anyway: fic writers, how do you deal with the heartbreak of having a project you were very excited about absolutely flopping? I had a bunch more planned & written. I can’t bring myself to open the doc

If one more person tells me to write for myself I’m gonna crash out. And by crash out I mean I’m gonna write a whole ass essay about why that’s fake af and make every person who says that read the whole thing.

I hope every fic writer who comes across this thread read this: in any fandom, big or small, you are part of *a very few* who decide to spend your free time creating new worlds and extended universes for your favorite characters to live. Be kinder to yourself. You rock.
