After a fantastic #MEB2026 conference in Montpellier, where we shared #MIRECLIM results, we’re back in the field on our peatlands. Blooming cottongrass, cranberries, and stunning peatland views remind us why we love this work. And pesticide-free cereal field, simply beautiful!
A good end to the year for our team! A paper has just been published that highlights the role of peatlands as climate-change refugia in Central Europe and the importance of microclimate. It is part of the special issue *Climate Change Refugia Conservation* in *CSP
💧🌱 Got #peatland microclimate data? We need you!
The MEB (@SoilTemp) Peatland Initiative calls for contributions to build the first global synthesis of peatland microclimates.

We collected some peat cores for physico-chemical analyses. Our #Mireclim sites are very diverse. And the last photo – that used to be a Tomst logger. Looks like the animals had a party. Again 🙂
The word is out officially, now: SoilTemp has finished its transformation into 'The MEB-network' - a fully-fledged research network that goes far beyond just being a database.
Let me show you all the ways you can get involved here:

Another field trip behind us! This time, we retrieved our 1-year tea bags (@TeaBagIndex) and replaced them with a fresh set. Nature treated us to the blooming of **Ledum palustre** and **Eriophorum vaginatum**—a truly picturesque time of year!🐍
Time for reading out the loggers and taking samples. Some animals have damaged some plots, but we have fixed most of them. And autumn is beautiful here, but day is too short…
We had a very good time on peatlands with @GarneauMichell1, who is an advisory board member of @Mireclim project, lots of discussions and observations. Groundwater level in some peatlands has dropped below 100 cm. Even though autumn is usually the driest, it is too low!#NCNtotlen
Why do we use TMS-4 Long (30 cm) instead Standard @TOMSTloggers? In the peatlands we are exploring, in some places the mosses have grown more than 10 cm. It is great! Here, you can see:
Happy #WorldPeatlandDay ! We still don't know much about peatlands. One of the puzzles we are looking for is their #climate. Thanks to @NCN_PL, we are conducting research in over 30 peatlands in Poland to discover it. We celebrate during fieldworks!
One day Adrian weighed more than 600 tea bags for @TeaBagIndex, which we are putting in the bogs starting tomorrow. What an amazing job! The smell of tea was everywhere 😆
We install sensors in eastern Poland. Completely different peatlands, mostly shallow with dead tree trunks in the water, which are an unpleasant surprise during exploration. The ability to quickly balance is a valuable skill 😄. Eriophorum 💚 compensates🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟 time🤬
The last few days in Poland have been characterized by night frosts, which have already caused serious damage to fruit growing. At the studied peatlands, the ground temperature dropped to over -5°C degrees. It is cold!❄️ @igsopas
