Amazing work
So thrilled that our MA student, who spent several years researching a biography of Capt James Fitzjames, is key to this remarkable discovery. Her research connected the Canadian scholars with Fitzjames' descendant. Congratulations, Fabienne! 'Finding Fitzjames', indeed!

Amazing artwork & writing on display at @BerksArchives today - inspired by local schoolchildren’s responses to George’s life story. (Art by Euan Cook, writing/poetry by Maisie Crittenden; joint project with RBA, @UniRdg_History & local primaries)

got my Pirate Historian Hat on (probably a tricorn) & torn between ‘this is true’ and ‘this relies on a pervasive trope of pirates as radical outsiders anachronously applied outside of a few key examples, which impedes historical literacy’. on balance, gonna go with ‘so true!’
Writers who write pirates as the good guys love to tone down the brutality of the pirates. this is not really necessary given that you can simply put the pirates next to a realistic portrayal of the British Empire to make the brutality look justified

many historical pirates were heavily involved in colonial efforts, officially or unofficially, & should not be considered outsiders to that system. but also this is obviously just a tweet about pirates of the caribbean. there’s an octopus guy. it’s not a documentary. it’s good

Been playing around with network analysis (#Gephi) to reconstruct feuds in late-medieval cities for my research. This is what a 20-year enmity between rival families employed in butchery and leather-work looks like:
