If I use "woke" as a sneering epithet, it means (1) I'm white or male or straight or Christian, (2) you've just reminded me that (a) not everyone is like me, and (b) they, too, deserve respect, (3) I resent that reminder, but (4) I can't cite a defensible reason for my reaction.

With what educators call "class participation," as with most things, we need to look at motives, not just behavior. Does it reflect genuine engagement (wondering aloud) or is it just an effort to impress the teacher? (Hint: If it's being graded, it's almost certainly the latter.)
