#Ethiopian Meteorology Institute warns of #heavy rainfall, flash #floods in August The Ethiopian Meteorology Institute has warned that several parts of the country are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall in August, with the potential for hailstorms and flash floods. The Institute stated that areas in the northeast, north, central, southwest, and western regions will likely receive significant rainfall. It further cautioned that cloud formations resulting from solar heating could produce heavy downpours accompanied by hailstones, increasing the risk of localized flash flooding. Additional risks linked to persistent high humidity were also noted, including waterlogging in low-lying farmlands and the likelihood of landslides and flooding in steep, highland areas. Farmers and relevant stakeholders were advised to prepare flood diversion and drainage systems to protect crops from inundation and reduce the spread of crop diseases and weeds associated with excessive moisture. The Institute also warned of possible flash floods in watershed areas exposed to intermittent but intense summer rainfall.

ℹ️ Official #GHACOF70 Release! 🔔 ☀️🌧️ Above-normal rainfall is expected across most parts of the Greater Horn of Africa (GHA) during the June to September (JJAS) period. This season is particularly critical for countries in the northern and western subregions of the GHA, as it contributes more than 40% of the annual rainfall—and over 90% in parts of Sudan. This makes the seasonal forecast important for early action and planning in sectors such as agriculture, water resources, disaster risk reduction, and food security. #Ethiopia: Fatal flooding claims four lives in #Addis_Abeba The Fire and Disaster Risk Management Commission has reported that four individuals have tragically lost their lives due to flooding in the Weregenu area of #Bole Sub-district, Woreda 11, in Addis Abeba this morning. This unfortunate incident occurred following heavy rainfall. It has been determined by the commission that constructions along the riverside, which were not in compliance with the city administration's master plan, have heightened the risk of flooding for the community. In response to this issue, the commission is currently implementing permanent solution works as outlined in an approved plan aimed at reducing this risk and vulnerability. Residents are strongly advised to adhere to any precautionary instructions that are issued by both the city administration and the Fire and Disaster Risk Management Commission during periods of heavy precipitation to prevent the recurrence of similar tragic incidents. As the autumn rain season approaches, the commission has issued a warning that an estimated 1.9 million individuals nationwide could be impacted by floods resulting from the seasonal rains. Furthermore, it is anticipated that over one million people may experience temporary displacement from their homes as a consequence.
