✨ I am looking for a new full-time job! ✨ As you may know, I’ve been working closely with Louise Fili as her Senior Designer and Associate, and more recently as a Partner at Tipofili. After nearly six years, I am looking for what’s next! matthewsmith.website/portfol…

I genuinely do need to write about this because I was looking at an image and thinking to myself “I hate the way this font was drawn, I bet it is from [redacted]” And lo and behold it was.
Very satisfied with myself after successfully identifying a font based on the foundry’s “hand” and drawing quality.

Heard this from a prospective client this month: "The team won't sign off because they want a 1-to-1 example of work in our space." It's the most common objection in design hiring. It feels rational. It isn't. If you hire someone who's already done your thing, you'll get a version of what's already been done. That's not how you stand out. That's how you blend in. Good design transfers. Taste, judgement, and craft don't care what industry you're in. The teams that get the best work hire for taste. The teams that get safe work hire for category fit.

I recently saw two different demos where people were using the edges of the screen to compress content as you scrolled or navigated the canvas. One was vertical scrolling text, the other was images or rectangles on a canvas. Does this ring a bell? Can you link me? 😩

In my 6 years of working with Louise Fili, I don’t think we ever presented a moodboard.

just watched this lady’s video where she argues that the language surrounding marketing roles is going through a rebrand/process of masculinisation in order to make them sound new/data driven and “serious” for men

*SEEKING SUMMER INTERN* I'm bringing on an intern this summer to work with me at the studio. Work on real pre-launch consumer products, and see the inner workings of a small design practice. Requires some IRL time in Berkeley, so likely a @UCBerkeley student. Apply below!

Here’s a look at just about every logotype I have worked on. Most used, some unused, and a few director’s cuts.

Many of these were drawn in collaboration with other designers. You can find their names, and view these marks all on my site: matthewsmith.website/logotyp…
