Today, I welcomed Dr. Sera L. Young, Professor at Northwestern University, for a courtesy call at my Maji House office in Nairobi. Our discussion focused on key interventions to champion the global and regional water security agenda. Central to this was integrating the Water Insecurity Experiences (WISE) Scales—groundbreaking tools developed under Dr. Young's leadership to measure human experiences regarding water access. We explored a long-term collaboration between Northwestern University and the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation to leverage these scales in data-driven programming. This partnership will provide precise, household-level data to uncover hidden water scarcity gaps that traditional metrics overlook, thereby enabling targeted interventions to fast-track our national progress toward universal water access, as envisaged in the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Irrigation is critical to Kenya’s economy and food security as it enables farmers to grow high-value crops year-round, independent of rainfall, while creating rural jobs and boosting export earnings. In line with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), we are committed to improving irrigated agriculture by empowering smallholder farmers, modernising schemes, and expanding access to modern technologies for greater productivity and resilience. Today, I held a productive meeting with Eng. Charles Muasya, MBS, CEO of the National Irrigation Authority; Mr. Daniel Kipkemei, MBS, Administrative Secretary, State Department for Irrigation; and Mr. Daniel Mutune Kihara, Senior Chief Finance Officer, State Department for Irrigation, to discuss the status of our country’s irrigation portfolio.
