I've been tinkering with a new project I am calling rurality.app, which is tool that scores any U.S. location on a 0–100 rurality index using RUCC codes, population density, distance to metros, and broadband data. The index is very much a work in progress, and I hope to get feedback. I also recently released a companion R package (rurality) on CRAN (dev version on Github) so researchers can plug these measures into their own analyses. If you work in rural policy, election admin, public health, or just think a lot about how we define "rural," I'd love to hear from you.

🚀 @Stata package #graphfunctions has been bumped to v1.6. This release is a major upgrade and provides a modular grammar-of-graphics toolkit for data visualizations. It currently contains a suite of five programs that be used to build custom visualizations from the bottom up: ⭐ shapes: shapes is the primary package that can be used to generate (circles with n>=3 points, pies and arcs, squares) and tranform shapes (rotate, translate, dilate, stretch). ⭐This release also adds shapes round that allows users to round the edges. ⭐ arc: draw minor or major arcs between two points. ⭐ radscatter: generate scatter points and angles in polar coordinates. ⭐ labsplit: A package for text wrapping. This is already used in several of my other packages. ⭐ catspline: generate smooth splines between points. 👉 This version was showcased at the Stata Switzerland Conference in Bern on 21st Nov 2025. Some of the visuals presented at the conference are shown below and their code is available on GitHub (link below). 👉 This package is targeted towards advanced users who have programming knowledge. 👉 This package will be enhanced in the coming months to allow fully customizable blocks that will allow users to generate their own visualization packages. I will add more tutorials on how to build custom visualizations. Installation and examples: github.com/asjadnaqvi/stata-… Up soon SSC! #GrammarofGraphics #dataviz #stataviz

I am seeing tons of people react to this and say “Look at the AER, QJE” tons of papers with data from developing countries. I did my first 13 years as an academic in Brazil, of course it’s possible to publish good work from the periphery, but it’s SO MUCH HARDER, you have no idea

Five 1,300-year-old bread loaves found preserved in ancient Eirenopolis in Turkey. One of the carbonised Byzantine loaves, which were very likely intended for use as communion bread, bears the image of Jesus and an inscription in Greek: ‘With our thanks to Blessed Jesus.’
