National Disability Employment Awareness Month, or NDEAM, celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive policies and practices that benefit employees and employers alike. ALT Slide three: What is the History? 50 years ago, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was passed. This law prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in programs conducted by federal agencies, in programs receiving federal financial assistance, in federal employment and in the employment practices of federal contractors. This was the first federal legislation to address access and equity for people with disabilities. The United States Congress declared October as NDEAM in 1988.
