10 years after Ferguson, @mfriedrichnyc links history and our current political moment to police culture and its preoccupation with violence. A tremendously generous and incisive review for @thenation.

Regulators who are not worried about PE because they think they are much less levered than banks should read this. Not much “equity” in the business model these days ig.ft.com/private-equity via @ft

As people list Biden’s accomplishments, the HISTORIC and HUGE decline in child poverty in 2021 due to his expanded CTC needs to be highlighted. And, I’d point out Harris proposed something very close to this policy when she ran for president in 2016. sfo2.digitaloceanspaces.com/

To explain regulatory variation across countries, its not enough to look at the economic circumstances regulators face or the relative power of the financial industry. Regulators and their worldviews take center stage. Holds implications for how we should design better policy.

If you couldn’t care less about finance, you’ll like my bigger argument about where better/worse regulation comes from. Key point: regulatory differences emerge from divergent beliefs about economic order and prosperity. Beliefs really matter for the choices regulators make

If you care about financial regulation, you’ll like my comparative and historical approach. Comparison across countries and over time revealed new trends that challenge traditional stories about how financial regulation has evolved—especially in the US.

The book explains how the U.S., Canada, and Spain came to develop different financial regulatory systems leading up to the 2008 crisis, with direct implications for how banks performed during the crisis. Banks that behaved badly brought societies down with them.
