We are shocked and desperately saddened to learn that the famous Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrian's Wall has been felled overnight, in what appears to be an act of vandalism.
We know just how much this iconic tree is loved locally, nationally and by everyone who has visited.
We are working with our partners to understand what has happened and what can be done.
The incident has also been reported to the police.

Extraordinary to hear Steve Barclay on @BBCr4today this morning, arguing that doctors cannot be offered a fair pay deal to make up for the huge depreciation in wages over previous decades - because teachers are paid so little.
We should pay teachers more too!
Why should these key workers in the public sector be penalised and exploited for not choosing to work in the private sector?

Another piece that characterises the 'young' Junior Drs strikes as just about pay. Junior Drs are all those below Consultant (many over 40) who are also fighting for better training, working conditions and opportunities - plus the future of the NHS.

Recall that the government has spent months saying it can't find any money to prevent nurses and teachers getting very big pay cuts. He just found £6 billion to cut fuel duties. That's a choice.
