🔔New research w/ Prof @ZiYan55010264
We ran a 10-week intervention testing the effect of self-assessment (SA) diaries. Students who documented and reflected on their learning AND received explicit teacher support for SA showed the biggest gains.

In an AI world, it’s easy to avoid effort.
That’s why students need teachers more—to push them toward the hard things now that shape who they become later.

While achievement goals have been researched heavily in the context of second language learning, there are also other types of goals that are equally crucial in studying how students learn a second language. Read our recent paper in SSLLT: doi.org/10.14746/ssllt.48242

We ran correlations with the strength of the moderating role of parental support on country-level collectivism and found a positive association from .35 to .51 (see below). Parental support effects on mindset-outcomes link is notable in collective contexts.💭
So happy to share our cross-cultural study using the PISA data. @HyunJiLee07 and I found cultural variations in how parental support can influence the mindset-achievement/persistence link, with stronger effects seen in collective cultures.

💡Highlights:
1️⃣Overall, parental support increases the growth mindset predictions on achievement/persistence
2️⃣ This is true in some countries, but not in others (variations are beyond east vs west comparison)
3️⃣ Post-hoc analyses showed collectivism has a role to play
📣Thrilled to share our new study in the British Journal of Educational Psychology. A rising tide lifts all boats: The social contagion of achievement in L2 classrooms and the role of intrinsic motivation and engagement. doi.org/10.1111/bjep.12752 With @archiezador and @_wilzondizon
Highlights:
1️⃣ Students' L2 learning achievement is influenced by their classmates' achievement levels
2️⃣ This effect is stronger for students with higher intrinsic motivation
3️⃣ And those with higher behavioral and emotional engagement

Every time I stumble upon papers from authors from the University of Tubingen and Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education, both in Germany, it is mind-blowing. This is great quantitative science right here. These Lüdtke papers, man. Their bar is on another level.
Didn’t immediately realized it but it is @flhuang that wrote this incredibly helpful and practical paper that walks you through long-held myths about multilevel modelling—a paper I read and referred to a lot during my PhD.🤯
Great to hear Francis @flhuang speak passionately, despite the jet lag, about the value of replication studies using Secondary or Nonexperimental
Datasets here at EdUHK. Looking fwd to the extended workshop on Thur. @FEHD_EdUHK@EPL_EdUHK@SoobinChoi2 👏🏻
