ALT The statues on Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre seen against a pale blue sky in the early morning autumnal light. The new facade of the Citizens Theatre is composed of a mass of black brick floating over a pale cream brick base with niches for posters of shows. The Citizens Theatre name is picked out in neon tubing. Appropriately for a theatre, the statues represent the Muses and are the four Greek goddesses Melpomene (tragedy), Thalia (comedy), Euterpe (song and poetry), and Terpsichore (dance). They are framed by William Shakespeare and Robert Burns. The statues were by the great Glasgow sculptor John Mossman best known for established the Glasgow School of Art. Though the Muses were originally from a building on Ingram Street they have now been on this site for 147 years having been brought here by the great Glasgow builder John Morrison who later built the City Chambers. As part of the work to regenerate the Citizens Theatre they were restored by Scottish sculptor David J Mitchell
