Setting background color value of an attributed string hides selection view and text cursor. Ouch.

Apparently the solution to this is to remove temporarily the background color of the text that is selected, and restore it when text is deselected.

Not a good solution, since there is no way to clear the background color between letters, in case user just moves around the cursor without selecting any text.
