The Enugu State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs. Oluwakemi Awolola, has charged Prospective Corps Members of the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream I Orientation Course to embrace discipline, unity, patriotism and active participation as essential ingredients for a successful Orientation Course and service year.
Mrs. Awolola gave the charge during a comprehensive briefing session held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Awgu, where she acquainted the Prospective Corps Members with the objectives of the Scheme, camp administration, welfare services, security arrangements, Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED), healthcare provisions, and other critical aspects of the Orientation Course.
Welcoming the Prospective Corps Members on behalf of the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the State Coordinator congratulated them on the successful completion of their academic programmes and subsequent mobilization for national service. She noted that the NYSC Scheme was established to promote national unity, integration, and development, urging them to see the service year as an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
She described the three-week Orientation Course as a transformative programme designed to equip participants with the values, knowledge, and skills required for a rewarding service year. She therefore encouraged them to participate fully in all camp activities and conduct themselves in accordance with the rules and regulations governing the Scheme.
Speaking on ongoing infrastructural improvements within the camp, Mrs. Awolola disclosed that several renovation projects are being undertaken with the support of the Enugu State Government under the leadership of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. She commended the government's commitment to youth development and advised the Prospective Corps Members to observe all safety measures around designated construction areas.
The State Coordinator further enlightened the Prospective Corps Members on the four cardinal programmes of the NYSC Scheme. She explained that the Orientation Course serves as the foundation of national service and comprises drills, lectures, SAED training, sports, and other structured activities. She noted that participants would subsequently proceed to their Places of Primary Assignment (PPA), where they would render services in line with national needs and their respective qualifications.
She also highlighted Community Development Service (CDS) as a vital component of the Scheme, encouraging the Prospective Corps Members to identify and address developmental needs within their host communities through impactful projects and initiatives. She explained that the Winding-Up and Passing-Out phase marks the successful completion of the service year.
On camp administration, Mrs. Awolola outlined the leadership and committee structures established to ensure the smooth management of camp activities. She informed the Prospective Corps Members about the roles of Camp Officials, Platoon Officers, and Camp Directors in facilitating effective communication and addressing welfare concerns.
The State Coordinator reminded them that lecture sessions had commenced and stressed that attendance at all official activities was compulsory. She urged them to pay close attention to the various presentations, as they contain vital information necessary for a successful Orientation Course and service year.
Addressing issues relating to dress code, accommodation, and sanitation, she directed participants to wear approved NYSC uniforms at all times and maintain high standards of cleanliness within the hostels and camp environment. She also encouraged the proper use of sanitation facilities and adherence to environmental hygiene practices.
