It's true!

Y’all. John Oliver featured a paper I wrote with @coreysdavis & Lainie Rutkow, alongside community guides on the opioid settlements created by Christine Minhee, Kate Boulton, @ocelette, and me (among others)!

This idea that we cannot figure out a way to truly support people with disabilities unless we allow two specific corporations to circumvent the minimum wage rules of our city is some real corporate galaxy brain shit.

Telling unhoused people to "just go to a shelter/church" has the same energy as telling an disabled person to "just get disability" or telling an undocumented person to "just apply for citizenship." It makes it clear that you don't even know what you don't know.

You’re tweeting this at the EXACT SAME TIME that your MPD and Public Works are evicting an encampment.

The verdict comes as United Nations specialists arrive in Minneapolis today. The group, which was formed after George Floyd’s murder, has been in the US this week looking into laws and police use of force for a report to be submitted to UN Human Rights Council later this year.

Last week the City Council received a report on Mayor Frey’s ongoing evictions of encampments. Instead of recommendations on how to get people into homes, Frey’s staff doubled down on a political narrative to justify brutalizing unsheltered people.
While the Minneapolis City Council prepared to hear a report Tuesday about the city's response to homeless encampments, occupants of a camp in the East Phillips neighborhood began packing after getting verbal warnings of imminent closure. startribune.com/as-minneapol…

Housing First is the national consensus about effectively reducing homelessness–center the humanity of unsheltered people and prioritize housing & support services. Public health experts, the Biden Admin and the City of Saint Paul are all adopting a Housing First approach.

Countless people are one emergency away from losing their home. Many of us have loved ones who are or have been unsheltered. Residents want humane and effective solutions. Encampment evictions have been completely ineffective in everything except traumatizing people.

Today I want to share some examples from Ohio, where concerns about a lack of transparency around #opioid settlement funds are arising at both the state and local levels. #THREAD
13/ In the coming days, I’ll share more threads with examples of states/localities that are keeping their opioid settlement funds secret and some that are working hard at transparency. I’ll also post tips for local reporters—or anyone else—who wants to dig deeper into the issue.

🧵State & local govts are receiving $50B from companies accused of fueling the #opioidcrisis. But how much will they publicly report on its use? Will people in recovery, families & others know how it’s spent? My @khnews investigation with Christine Minhee. khn.org/news/article/opioid-…

The only thing funnier than cops faux-verdosing is Jennifer printing this entire statement without including a single fact check. If you can walk, talk, & get ‘a little agitated’ you are 100% not overdosing on anything but your own farts.
'Everybody was better after we gave them Narcan. For Narcan to work, it had to be some type of narcotic, fentanyl with some type of opioid in it,' Fire Chief Les Whalen tells me. fox19.com/2023/03/29/fire-ch…

We pay for cops to show up after you’ve been robbed & take notes. If they ever find your stuff they charge you $100s to “hold” it. When you can’t pay it or their shitty computers break, you get to pay more. Every day until you give up & they sell it to another cop at auction.
Today, I had to drive to the St Paul Police impound lot to check out my car. It wouldn't start, so I signed it over to my insurance so we could get a tow and headed home. My insurance is having me set up a tow and a shop. Fine. Tow guy asks if I paid the impound lot yet.

For ever dollar stolen in shoplifting, there are at least $5 in wage theft and $100 in tax evasion. Have you ever heard about a wage theft or tax evasion "crime wave"? What do you think this tells you about how journalists determine what is "news" and what is ignored?
