I’m sold that startups / small businesses are the most fun for writing software. A startup doesn’t mean you should write YOLO garbage. Quality matters – but you can create without endless meetings, novel-length requirement docs and cross-team dependencies.

I’ve heard a couple of you are refactoring code without approval. Let’s be respectful to the business. Do not refactor unless we have business approval and we’ve moved a refactoring card into play on the board. #NotMyAgile

I wish folks would think about the tradeoffs & incentives of team coding workflows instead of arguing about who to copy. tidyfirst.substack.com/p/thi… (P.S. Not a fan of being used for argument from authority. I know too much to trust me.)

"Why you're not using PRs in your project?" "Because we prefer to use CI/CD" "But but..." "Listen, @KentBeck invented CI, @davefarley77 invented CD. They both agree that PRs and feature branches are incompatible with CI/CD. What do you know that they don't?"

Gave a talk today and IMMEDIATELY had the driest mouth. A desert appeared from no where. Couldn’t find the mute button mid-pres to sip (damn you Zoom!) New (mild) nightmare unlocked

Look, I get it, compiling nokogiri is a great joke and it will never get old. But at least update your mental models: Pre-1.11, 94% of users had to compile, and it was a struggle. Post-1.11, 96% are installing precompiled libraries, instantly, it just works.

Many aspects of software are subject to entropy. It takes extraordinary effort to do any of these after the fact: • Simplify features • Increase code quality • Make designs more opinionated • Reduce build & test duration • Decrease resource consumption Later ≈ Never

Thinking of designing a new open source license for small personal projects that have the bad luck of becoming immensely popular. The "You Break It, You Buy It" (YBIYBI) license would stipulate that whoever reports a bug is subsequently obligated to fix it.

🎲 Using random data in regular RSpec unit and integration tests is just asking for intermittent CI failures. Don't do it! And yes, that includes using Faker in your factories.
