The most #distressing thing to me as a #nurse is when a patient asks for their #family to be with them for support after receiving a critical diagnosis. I call them to communicate this request.
But, no one shows up… for days 😔. #criticalcare #ICU

During the hight of Covid, I called an elderly pts daughter so they could share some last words before she got intubated. I did most of the talking because the pt was so short of breath. Her daughter responded with, ok mom I’ll call to check on you.

She never said I love you or anything.
I thought for sure that was going to be the last time they ever spoke.
It broke my heart and that conversation will forever stay with me.
