The powerful weapons used in modern wars threaten to lead us to a barbarism greater than that of the past. In the name of human dignity and international law, I repeat to those in positions of responsibility what Pope Francis used to say: 'War is always a defeat!' And with Pope Pius XII: 'Nothing is lost with peace. Everything can be lost with war.'

No pope yet. Next time to watch the chimney will be around 7pm AEST.
Black smoke emerged from the chimney over the Sistine Chapel at 21:00 on Wednesday evening, signalling that a first ballot has been held at the conclave and has concluded without the election of a Pope. vaticannews.va/en/vatican-ci…

Black smoke signalled the end of the first day of the conclave at 21:00, hours after the doors of the Sistine Chapel were closed with the words, "Extra omnes" or "Everyone out." This means the conclave will continue tomorrow morning when the Cardinal electors will gather once more in the Chapel around 10:30am Rome time to cast their votes again for the election of the 267th Pope.

The Sede Vacante during the 2025 Holy Year evokes historical parallels with the Jubilee of 1700, which was also marked by the death of a Pope, Innocent XII, who died before the end of the Holy Year he had proclaimed. loom.ly/U9XYi_E

Melbourne is very interesting. Has there been an election where two party leaders have lost their seats? Bandt may follow Dutton out the door. #ausvotes

How are the independents are going? Dr Monique Ryan looks likely to hold Kooyong. She’s ahead with a 1.9% swing, but with only a small portion of the votes counted, it’s best to be cautious here. Goldstein is too close to call, but Teal independent Zoe Daniel is marginally ahead of her old foe, Liberal Tim Wilson. There’s a 3% swing to the Liberals though. Helen Haines looks safe in Indi on 58.9% after almost half the votes are counted, despite a small swing to the Liberals of 0.1%. Allegra Spender is sitting comfortable in Wentworth with a swing towards her of 8.3% and a very comfortable 65% of the vote, with a third counted so far. Zali Steggall has a 3.1% swing towards her in Warringah, and a comfortable 62.4% of the vote. WA votes are only just starting to be counted, so it's too early to know the fate of Kate Chaney. What this tells us so far is a very positive story for the independents. Once they win the hearts of an electorate, they’re usually there for the long haul. It’s injecting a third political force into the House of Representatives.
