I think that my former Medical School will soon announce to its staff that some of them will have to go. Staff really don't earn their keep (should they?) and we won't miss them or some such 🐎💩.
the scale of the cuts at nottingham: of course music, languages, and american studies are just gone, but they are also chopping biosciences and the medical school in half

British Council educators in Italy are striking to save their jobs.
Congress passed a motion backing them last week, and we’ve written to @FLCCGIL in solidarity. ✊
ALT Dear colleagues I am writing to express our full solidarity with British Council workers in Italy whose jobs are threatened by the decision to close the British Council's teaching operations in the country. At our Congress last week, delegates passed a motion committing UCU to support your campaign to defend these jobs and to safeguard the future of British Council teaching in Italy. We recognise the profound impact that these closures would have on workers, their families, students, and on the longstanding cultural and educational links between the United Kingdom and Italy. We support your efforts to secure the withdrawal of these plans and to protect the livelihoods of those affected. We also share your concern about the wider implications for bilateral cultural cooperation and educational exchange. UCU is committed to working with CGIL and British Council workers in practical ways to support the campaign. We will do all we can to use our influence with Members of Parliament.

It looks like the government is about to slash the ‘strategic priorities grant’. This is niche, but important. It will add to pressure on UK universities at a moment of crisis. It is also a truly spectacular example of joined-up policy.
