A group of settlers just lynched Hamdan Ballal, co director of our film no other land. They beat him and he has injuries in his head and stomach, bleeding. Soldiers invaded the ambulance he called, and took him. No sign of him since.

As much as large market, region-wide outlets try to cover every council across the Lower Mainland, fact is, they can’t. Local outlets are so, so important. Some of the best accountability pieces have been done by these reporters.
In another sign of the struggle facing the local news industry, three Lower Mainland publications have announced they are set to close. vancouver.citynews.ca/2025/0…

I worked at all of these outlets earlier in my career. This is just awful. I don't know who, if anyone, is left dedicating coverage to these communities. Burnaby Now, New Westminster Record, Tri-City News to close burnabynow.com/local-news/bu… via @BurnabyNOW_News

This is terrible news for local news. These outlets did such great work to inform their communities. Local newsrooms matter so much more than people think they do. Im so sorry to all the amazing journalists who worked so hard for these newsrooms. newwestrecord.ca/local-news/…

In many cases, these orgs provide our last window into what is actually happening in China. They do the painstaking, risky work of tracking Chinese censorship, tallying local protests, uncovering rights violations, & documenting the Uyghur genocide. aspistrategist.org.au/with-u…

As per the last lines of my story: The Times Colonist was unable to reach Wallis for comment regarding his future steps. But a recent one-word social media post left a clue as to where he might go next: “Camping.”

Asking difficult questions of powerful figures is my job. I asked questions I believe are in the public interest to ask. How someone wishes to respond to a question is their choice. They don't have to answer, but I do have to ask.
