🚨 China just approved the world’s first commercial brain implant.
China has officially approved the world’s first commercial invasive brain-computer interface (BCI), beating Elon Musk’s Neuralink to market.
Developed by Tsinghua University researchers and Shanghai-based Neuracle Technology, the coin-sized device, named NEO, has cleared regulatory hurdles to help patients with paralysis and spinal cord injuries regain mobility.
Unlike Neuralink's N1 implant, which penetrates deep into brain tissue, NEO’s eight sensors sit safely on the dura mater—the brain's protective outer membrane. This less invasive design dramatically reduces surgical and long-term biological risks, which experts say is the primary reason the device secured rapid regulatory clearance.
While Neuralink continues its clinical trials in the United States under strict FDA scrutiny, China has integrated NEO directly into its national health insurance system, setting the stage for immediate mass production. The device decodes motor signals in real time, allowing paralyzed patients to control assistive devices like pneumatic gloves using only their thoughts.
Supporters celebrate this milestone as a life-changing breakthrough for billions suffering from neurological disorders. However, experts warn that the rapid commercialization of BCIs also introduces uncharted risks regarding cybersecurity, consumer privacy, and the potential hacking of sensitive neural data.
