1/2 Announcing: A $40M commitment from @xtxmarkets to @GlobTalent Many exceptionally gifted young mathematicians and scientists never get the chance to develop their talents. We are working to change that. GTF and XTX co-founded BIG Talent Scholars in 2023. With this new commitment, we will bring 150 more scholars to the world's top universities.

I wrote a long blot post on the economics of AI, prompted by two great workshops (Windfall and NBER), and me leaving OpenAI for METR: TLDR: we driving in the fog. 1. There is no standard model of AI’s economic impact. Economists have been using a wide range of assumptions to model AI’s impact, there is no standard framework. There seems to me an opportunity for ambitious economists to propose deep models of AI’s impact. A promising line would concentrate on AI’s ability to find low-dimensional representations of the world.

1/6 🧵 Schools always work hard to support students who struggle. But what about talented students who find class too slow? Without challenge, talented students risk disengagement. 🥱

In the 16th century, an Italian mathematician solved a 2,000-year-old math problem, laying the foundation for modern algebra. However, he kept it secret until his death. WHY? 🧵 on math duels among academics in Renaissance Italy, the economics of secrecy, and imaginary numbers.
