To commemorate my father’s 95th birthday, I want to remind Spock fans that dad’s parents were Ukrainian immigrants which shaped my father in many ways. Four years of Putin’s war has brought death and destruction to our people, our homeland. LLAP. #standwithukraine #ukraine

Welcome news more than half a century too late. We need, however, to reinsert the drive for white supremacy back into the context. The BBC story implies that the principal motivation for Belgium and other Western powers conspiring to kill Patrice Lumumba were Cold War suspicions of his ties with Moscow. This is untrue. The real reason was that many in Brussels, London, Washington did not want to see the emergence of a powerful and united Africa and wanted to maintain white supremacy over at least the southern half of the continent (1/3)
A Belgian court has ruled that a former diplomat can stand trial in connection with the killing in 1961 of Patrice Lumumba, Congo's first prime minister. bbc.in/4cSs84k

I don’t mind that Europeans frame the post-WW2 era as a ā€œrules-basedā€ ā€œglobal orderā€ that’s now seemingly crashing down. But it’s irritating that many don’t even see that this is a parochially European perspective - like the ā€œCold Warā€ - and that for the vast majority of the world the much bigger story of the last eight decades has been the transition from a centuries-old age of (largely Atlantic) empires and the ability (or inability) of the ā€œWestā€, often racially identified, to come to terms with even a slightly diminished place in the world.
At the Munich Security Conference, European leaders are not holding back in assessing that the post-World War II global order is kaput—and they blame Trump. foreignpolicy.com/2026/02/13…

I have been laid off today from the @washingtonpost, along with most of the International staff and so many other wonderful colleagues. I’m heartbroken for our newsroom and especially for the peerless journalists who served the Post internationally — editors and correspondents who have been my friends and collaborators for almost 12 years. It’s been an honor to work with them. I launched the WorldView column in January 2017 to help readers better understand the world and America’s place in it and I’m grateful for the half a million loyal subscribers who tuned into the column several times a week over the years.

The Riverview. A great Montana noir thriller by Jamie Harrison.
Noir doesn’t just live in the city… It can stretch across the Montana plains or lurk in a stack of old comics under a flickering desk lamp.
