Crises, such as pandemics or floods, are not only a technical challenge, but also a deeply human one. In this Science Speaks video, PDPC researchers explain how communities, neighbourhoods and cities can better prepare for and recover from future crises: youtube.com/watch?v=YnoGFGW9…

We need to get ahead of this Ebola outbreak.

The humanitarian community is fully mobilized – but the challenges are immense.

Speed, funding, access and community trust will determine whether we contain this.

Ebola in DRC is far from under control. 741 suspected cases. Each of these need to be tested and interviewed to find who they were in contact with. One key metric for outbreak control is which % of contacts has been reached. That currently is around 25% who.int/emergencies/alert-an…

Impressive! Genome sequence of the virus causing the outbreak in DRC/Uganda shared. That will allow checking which types of assays can be used pathoplexus.org/ebola-bdbv/s…?

Many people do not want to hear about preparedness. The interactions on this site are downright toxic. But for the few people that are here to just get some info: here is another example. Do you have to worry? Not really. Ebola is a problem in that specific region
Ebola Virus Disease outbreak confirmed in Ituri Province, DRC Africa CDC is closely monitoring the situation and convening an urgent high-level coordination meeting today with the DRC, Uganda, South Sudan and global partners to reinforce cross-border surveillance, preparedness and outbreak response efforts. Following consultations with DRC’s Ministry of Health and National Public Health Institute, preliminary laboratory results from L’Institut National de Recherche Biomédical - INRB Kinshasa detected Ebola virus in 13 of 20 samples tested. About 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths have been reported, mainly in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones. Four deaths have been reported among laboratory-confirmed cases. Suspected cases have also been reported in Bunia, pending confirmation. 🔗 Read full statement: ow.ly/g2Z450Z02vj #EbolaOutbreak #HealthSecurity #DRC

A classic: colleagues on DRC mentioned that the ebola outbreak was not detected by the genexpert. As this is a bundibugyovirus, that indeed is the case. It shows how important is is to have local detection capacity

After having consulted the #DRC and #Uganda where the #Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus is known to be currently occurring, I determine that the epidemic constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), as defined in the provisions of IHR. The Ebola outbreak in DRC has some serious red flag warnings. See below. And very problematic: the most commonly used test platform in the region cannot pick up this strain. That is a big handicap.
1. #WHO has declared the #Ebola #Bundibugyo outbreak in NE DRC a public health emergency of international concern, aka a PHEIC. Yet another sign this is likely to be a very challenging outbreak. So far there've been 8 confirmed cases, 246 suspected cases & 80 suspected deaths.
