Vox Media’s Chorus had amazing engg talent like @dz who built it, forward thinking designers (like @yeseniaa) creating design systems/components long before it became the norm, product leaders like Mandy who ran tight teams with solid shipping schedules. End of an era now.

Saddened to see this. Some of the best product and tech talent in media worked on Chorus while I was there. If it had been spun off into its own company, Chorus would have been on par with the best Saas tech companies out there.
Sources: Vox Media plans to stop using its Chorus CMS, which it licensed until 2022, and move its websites to WordPress (Axios) axios.com/2023/07/18/vox-med… mediagazer.com/230718/p10#a2…

My account was briefly hacked via SMS and my account details changed. Luckily I was able to retrieve the account. However, now I am getting threatening messages and calls! This is crazy stuff!

Jenn is one of the best newsroom leaders I know. Focused, decisive and willing to embrace change. Hire her!!!!

I’m being laid off as part of the HuffPost cuts today. Hillary Frey, Louise Roug & I, the top level of editorial leadership, are leaving, at least temporarily ending female leadership at one of the world's largest news sites, in a mostly male-led industry.

Back when newspapers and magazines were ad supported, top editors almost never became CEOs. Now it’s happened at least twice in 5 years with @nxthompson and @1bobcohn. Discuss.

NYT isn’t an easy place to work in (no media company is) but despite the internal challenges they have executed the best in terms of business opportunities (ad sales, paywall); building impressive journalism talent; and innovating on products (app, storytelling formats).

Tl;dr: If you're leaving a media company you helped run or start, you're either moving over to Substack or going to NYT.

since launching Inside Voices, we have billed clients for $15,000 worth of work, 100% of which has been used to buy groceries for people with food insecurity in NYC and Pittsburgh. we're still accepting new clients and extra design development help. hi@insidevoices.studio
insidevoices.studio/ I'm excited to announce the launch of a pop up design agency called Inside Voices. It is a different kind of agency in that it will donate all of its profits to local mutual aid projects. Here's why:

I might be naive here, but I think one reason why Jeff Bezos is worth $200 billion is that he doesn't do things like pay $50 billion for a trendy social app

Pre-covid, video always on felt necessary to foster teamwork and keep those in office in sync with remote folks. But now with all meetings all day on zoom, video fatigue is setting real. Face muting should be okay. Video optional should be a choice offered in meeting invites.

People are now finding out what the NYT knew all along-- media is all about recruiting, managing & maintaining talent. This list isn't bad for the NYT, in fact, it's the opposite. It's their strategy: build an environment for creators that's better than being on their own.

Covid has helped me understand the value of meeting ppl for lunch/ happy hour. Pre-covid, it felt like “networking”- part obligation/part fun. Now, I miss the IRL meet - the social connection frm sitting across the table, serendipity from a conv. A zoom chat isn’t the same.

The entire business model in video in big media is built on the idea of cheap/unpaid labor. That’s why it's easier to get consultants or make flashy moves to rehab its reputation.

New York Times’ business success has turned it into a whirlpool for talent. Amazing to see so many digital natives join the Gray Lady. Thrilled for them and the Times, which is crushing it right now.
