Couple of lazy Sunday thoughts on how the Nats seem to think they're going to waltz to re-election. The emerging strategy has three prongs. All are, ahem… bold. 🧵

Props to Nikki Macdonald and her editors for a much needed counterpoint to the insufferable, oblivious retirement age discourse dominated by soft-palmed keyboard tappers like me. thepost.co.nz/nz-news/361016…

Interesting and unexpected photo-essay here -- paywall free. Would be great if media here had the scope and resourses necessary for this calibre and depth of journalism. How Fuel Price Shocks Rattled a Remote New Zealand Village nytimes.com/2026/05/29/world…

Spending budget day of an election year talking almost entirely about the opposition isn't typically a landslide re-election signifier.

Founding Fathers, 1st and 2nd Presidents, and lifelong frenemies, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died on the same day, July 4 1826, exactly 50 years after they signed (and drafted, in Jefferson's case) the Declaration of Independence.
What historical fact sounds fake but is true?

Australian wages rose about 82% over 20 years. House prices rose 193%. Shares did even better. After two landslides, a LABOR GOVT proposes modest rebalancing of tax settings tax relief for 14m workers & it's punitive class warfare against boomers? Give me strength.

Don’t recall Seymour objecting to Peter Thiel declaring “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible” then being waved through as a citizen 3 yrs later. Or maybe the “respect for tolerance, freedom & democracy” thing doesn’t apply to billionaire sociopaths.

I've gone from shaking my head to slapping my thigh, from bemusement to amusement, wrt Luke Malpass' acrobatic sophistry in the PM's defense but to claim Luxon's problem is that he prizes clarity too much is well & truly over-committing to the bit. thepost.co.nz/politics/36099…

There’s something perfectly -- even adorably -- on-brand for Finlayson, the last Whig standing and archetypal anti-populist, to make the cost of living about airfares. rnz.co.nz/news/political/593…

It’s said of Russia that it can't be understood by the mind alone. Same goes for voting rights rulings of the Roberts Court -- their theory of race is so wildly at odds with history & empirical reality, the normal tools of reason can't make any sense of it nytimes.com/live/2026/04/29/…

Where can we bet on this bloke getting a pardon??
Breaking: A US special forces soldier involved in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was arrested for allegedly betting on that operation, netting him $400,000 in profits, according to a person familiar with the matter. -@cnn cnn.com/2026/04/23/politics/…

Apropos of nothing except that I’ve just been reminded of it in a book I’m reading: this disavowal of Know-Nothing nativists (19th century MAGA) is probably my favourite Lincoln quote apart from basically every line of Gettysburg and the Second Inaugural.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture & Heritage axed the excellent Ngā Tapuwae website offering popular & well-utilised guided tours for ANZAC pilgrims in Gallipoli and on the Western front, no doubt for the sin of using te reo in the name. newsroom.co.nz/2026/03/16/cu…

Always baffles me tbh when people in politics make lamguage choices seemingly designed against the possibility of persuading those who aren't already on board, like "fossil fuel crisis" or "tax justice".

Not sure all these warnings that voting for parties other than National might result in a government made up of those parties is quite the threat they think it is. stuff.co.nz/politics/3609682…

– Is this being offered consistently to all parties, or selectively? - If this was a resource provided in support of a campaign event — whether directly or in kind — how is that being accounted for in electoral returns?

Thia is a line that should not be blurred. At the very least, this needs a clear explanation. Because if this becomes normal — police presence as backdrop or buffer for campaign events — we’ve drifted into something we’d usually criticise in other countries, not replicate here.
