The identity of "queer" was first articulated by the neo-Marxist gender theorist Gayle Rubin in the academic essay "Thinking Sex", of 1984. In a little over a generation, the idea of "queer" has moved from the left-hand edge of academic radicalism to the Prime Minister's office.
