bread and circuses
It's clear that a lot of people just want to be proud of their country again after a Long Dark Winter when patriotism was basically equated with genocide for a decade-plus It's not "crass" to lift the national spirit after enduring that, White House should do this all summer

the rw obsession with these mythological BUILDERS is very strange to me. the VAST majority of people making this case are labor who've been invited to identify as entrepreneurs, and that borrowed identity is doing the all the work of aligning a gigantic wage-earning majority with a tiny capital-owning minority
I think possibly the best thing about Elon Musk becoming a trillionaire is how angry it makes a bunch of losers who've never built a thing in their lives.

tax the rich
If, when you say regulation, you mean the dead and clammy hand of the commissarโ€”the gentleman who has never in his life built a single thing, drafting rules to govern a thing he cannot define, to be enforced by men who cannot read them; if you mean the form in triplicate, the impact assessment upon the impact assessment, the compliance officer who breeds, in the warm dark of the org chart, further compliance officers unto the third and fourth generation; if you mean the moatโ€”the deep cold moat that the giant digs around his own castle and christens, with a perfectly straight face, public safetyโ€”the drawbridge he hauls up behind himself the very instant he is across, lest any hungrier and hungrier man should follow; if you mean the precautionary principle, which, had it governed our grandfathers, would have banned the wheel pending further study of the hill, and left us yet shivering and raw in the mouth of the cave, blessing its excellent ventilation; if you mean the European diseaseโ€”that magnificent open-air museum of a continent, which produces in our time precisely two things in great abundance, and they are regulation, and the eloquent and well-footnoted regret of cultivated men explaining at length why they have produced nothing else; if you mean the license required to think, the permission slip for honest arithmetic, the kingโ€™s wax stamp pressed upon the forehead of every new idea before it may draw its first breath; if you mean the agency dispatched, with trumpets, to slay a single dragon, which arrives at the cave, surveys the accommodations, and moves inโ€”and spends the ensuing century laying eggs and devouring the very villagers it was sworn to defend; if you mean the startup that perishes not of the marketโ€™s honest verdict but of the filing fee, the genius decamping by the next tide to a freer and warmer shore; if you mean the law that arrives, faithful as the swallows, exactly one whole epoch too lateโ€”helmeted, plumed, and magnificently armedโ€”to regulate the stagecoachโ€”then certainly, my friends, I am against it. Butโ€”but, my friendsโ€”if, when you say regulation, you mean instead the humble steel guardrail upon the mountain road at midnight, the very thing you curse on the easy days and bless on your knees the one night the fog comes down; if you mean the brakesโ€”for it is the brakes, and not the engine alone, that permit a sane man to drive fast and yet arrive aliveโ€”and the buttress, without which no cathedral was ever flung so high, but only in spite of which, but because of which; if you mean the meat inspector, who is the single homely reason a man may eat a sausage in this republic without first composing his last will and testament; if you mean the firebreak cut clean through the forest before the dry season of the burning, the smallpox cordon, the buoy that marks the channel, the rule of the road that lets ten thousand strangers hurtle past one another in the dark at fearful speed and arrive, by its quiet grace, every one of them home; if you mean the honest scale and the true weight, the reason a pound is a pound and a dollar a dollar from Natchez to Nome; if you mean the firm and decent wall between the counterfeit voice and the widowโ€™s bank account, between the deepfaked candidate and the ballot box on the eve of the vote, between the loosed and loveless machine and the schoolyard it neither knows nor pities; if you mean the simple plank of law that says the strong shall not, in the gray dawn, feed the weak quietly into the furnace and sell the rising smoke as progress; if you mean, in the end, the one slender thread of trust without which no citizen will ever dare to use the marvelous thing at allโ€”for where there is no rule there is no trust, and where there is no trust there is no commerce, and a miracle that no man dares to touch is no miracle, but only a handsome and expensive ghostโ€”then certainly I am for it. This is my stand. I will not retreat from it. I will not compromise one inch of it.

a hypothesis about the outsized elon stanning since the ipo: the right realizes there is an obvious and broadly compelling tax reform argument they are afraid may gain traction; elon is a trillionaire and you can't fill up your gas tank is the felt experience of maldistribution

ironically, by blasting increasingly insane defenses, they look out of touch and cruel by proxy. i predict that the net effect of this viral moment sublimates personally as more distaste toward the ultrawealthy and socially toward a modest (but measurable) swing to the left.

I am 52 years old. I have been working since I was 15 years old. I have no savings, no retirement, and will never own a home before I die. And there is now a trillionaire.

Musk as a trillionaire- anyone as a trillionaire- is a grotesque economic, moral and political problem. We cannot have individuals with that level of power, whatever they might have achieved.

hard not to despair about a tax system which has conspicuously failed to capture elon's outrageous gains.
Elon Musk just became the world's first trillionaire. The typical American household would have to work more than 11 MILLION years to make Elon Musk's level of wealth. We need a wealth tax.

Ah yes Ben has been a real advocate for checks on Trump. I recall the passionate monologue about Senate conviction after 1/6. Supporting hearings to investigate the Trump Crime Family's corruption. Calling for Congress to take back control of the purse in matters of war.
If you're very concerned about extroardinary wealth leading to concentration of power in government, may I suggest a system of horizontal and vertical checks and balances, restricted to limited and enumerated powers?

like attempting to nullify a constitutional amendment by executive order? like contesting the peaceful transfer of power? like stealing article I power to implement illegal tariffs? that kind of system? (this is what you voted for, ben).

this is psychologically pernicious in some deep way i don't fully understand.
It's rare that AI video makes me feel any emotion. But these "nostalgiamaxxing videos" really do capture what it's like to grow up in the 90's Credit: homeforchristmasofficial

the proof? no you can't see it. the proof goes to another school. in canada.
For those of you scoring along at home, the LA mayoral election has now moved from the "you have no proof of cheating" phase to the "okay fine, now you have proof, but there's nothing you can do about it" phase.

the most sophisticated election fraud operation in American history was carried about by Donald Trump in 2020 when he coordinated across multiple states to submit fraudulent Electoral College votes to Congress in an attempt to overturn or stall the certification of results
The LA fraud story is really unconvincing on my read, but I wish people would be less knee-jerk in rejecting allegations of fraud. It does happen and elections have even been reversed in my lifetime because of it. The moral of the boy who cried wolf is not that wolves donโ€™t exist

Ok, fellas, we see all your tags and we get it. But. Being a shitty person doesn't make someone a legitimate military target under international law. Climbing on a tank for internet clout isn't enough to become a combatant. Do something that actually qualifies โ€” then we can talk. Until then, we'll keep our drones for real military targets ๐Ÿ˜‰
