Andy Burnham is running to be MP in the Makerfield constituency in the town of Wigan. This just happens to be where I grew up. So I decided to write about my home-town and what makes it slightly different. open.substack.com/pub/postli…

IRISH AGRARIAN SECRET SOCIETIES THREAD (🇮🇪):
Replying to @post_liberal
‘A host of agrarian secret societies (Whiteboys, Rightboys, Oakboys) emerged - with a multiplicity of localised and specific grievances and objectives - to defy the authority of landlords’

The Rockites were more than an agrarian protest movement. Economic hardship fused with apocalyptic anti-Protestant beliefs inspired by Pastorini’s prophecies, helping to unite Catholics across class lines and giving the insurgency a distinctly sectarian character.

‘The Crown did manage, however, to hang around 100 Rockites between 1822 and the petering out of their exceptionally fierce campaign in 1824. Six hundred more were transported to Australian penal colonies’

Brazil v Morocco is the World Cup’s only group-stage match where both countries are outside Europe, but share a land border with a European state. Brazil borders France in the Amazon. Morocco borders Spain at Ceuta and Melilla. Stay tuned for more cutting-edge, geography-based World Cup analysis.

Oh Boy: President Donald Trump wants the NFL to change its name so that soccer is the only sport named football. "This is football, there is no question about it. We have to come up with another name for the NFL stuff." 😬😬😬

Built by a Welshman from Anglesey, William “Klondyke” Jones. He became the mayor of Bootle in 1886, was a strict Presbyterianism and never allowed any pubs on the estate. He made his own bricks and provided the estate with its own electricity. And if you go along Hawthorne Road today looking for a bevvy you still won’t find many pubs thanks to Mr Jones.
The Klondyke Estate in Bootle. Pictures taken in 2014 when the old houses had been abandoned and left basically to rot away. 1/2 @angiesliverpool @LiverpoolTweeta

The eruption also caused ‘the year without a summer’ in Europe and North America and influenced some of the paintings by JMW Turner too apparently
when mount tambora in indonesia erupted in 1815, the volcano killed all 10,000 tambora people and wiped out their culture entirely. their extinct language was uniquely non-austronesian & we only know about it from a 48-word vocabulary list collected by colonial officials in 1814

She couldn't have known. There were no signs. Nothing out of the ordinary happened right in front of her. What husband wouldn't shell out £4k for a pair of his wife's old shoes? Happens every day. dailymail.com/news/article-1…

You would have to go back to the 1990 World Cup—the last time Brazil failed to reach at least the Quarter-Finals—to find a Brazilian side as ordinary as the one in this World Cup. The likes of Igor Thiago and Lucas Paqueta are not fit to lace the boots of past Brazilian greats.

The problem is when you have a Brazilian side who are more European/defensive in style but don’t possess a Romario, or even a Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Kaka, etc, up top, then you end up with the Brazilian team of 1990 and of 2026. The worst of both worlds.

Igor Thiago up front for Brazil just feels wrong. Effective player for Brentford dont get me wrong but he’s basically a poor man’s Christian Benteke and he’s playing for the pre-eminent footballing nation on earth known for sprinkling magic dust on the most prestigious tournament

If anything sums up how washed Brazil are, 22/23 Fabinho was one of the funniest players I’ve seen for us, and he’s getting 45 minutes for Brazil in a World Cup 4 years later.

I’m enjoying all the foreign observers of the World Cup seemingly discovering for the first time that Scotland is in fact an absolutely football mad country and that selling out that stadium in Boston was never in doubt. I refer to the below:

The degree to which the UK is immiserating itself to achieve “net zero” targets is astonishing. The UK already accounts for less than 1% of global emissions.
Astonishing Telegraph story.

Farage going full mask-off white ID-politics is both a grim portent and also an inevitable consequence of asymmetric multiculturalism in which different socio-demographic groups are treated as distinct/separate voting blocs to be mobilised, courted and pandered to politically.
