Surrounded by the Alps and Lake Geneva, this seemingly impregnable castle is one of Switzerland's most spectacular landmarks. Owned by the House of Savoy during the Middle Ages, its history began much earlier, as the site occupied a strategic route connecting northern Europe with Italy. The beauty of the castle captivated Lord Byron, who wrote the poem The Prisoner of Chillon, inspired by the famous prisoner Franรงois Bonivard.
Chillon Castle, Lake Geneva, Switzerland!๐Ÿคฉ From the 11th Century, it was expanded in the 13th Century by Count Peter II and carefully restored in the 19th Century!

The World Tonight & Crossing Continents were the last BBC programmes that dealt in depth with global affairs. Their demise says everything about priorities in British public life, which is mired more than at any time in monolingual mediocrity & insularity. You reap what you sow.
Very sad to learn that Radio 4's The World Tonight is to be killed off in the latest round of BBC cuts. It has a long and honourable history as one of the more thoughtful BBC news programmes and I am proud to have been associated with it for more than twenty years.

Very sad to hear The World Tonight is being axed by the BBC. Newshour is a great programme but it isnโ€™t a substitute. Radio 4 and its audience wonโ€™t have a domestic facing outlet after 1800. I hope audiences now understand the challenges facing the BBC.

For about the last decade, the BBC has been chasing one particular audience; 16-35s. They imitated everyone else catering to that audience, and cut back on the kind of programmes that used to make the BBC distinctive, for all ages. It hasn't worked; the death spiral continues.
NEW: Entire BBC channels and radio stations being reviewed as part of broadcaster's huge cuts - whole shows will go. DG Matt Brittin says he will "review our broadcast TV channels and radio network portfolio as audiences move online". Up to 2k job cuts: theguardian.com/media/2026/jโ€ฆ

Yes indeed to this. My late wife had a distinguished career in cancer prevention (before succumbing to the disease herself); and, mild-mannered though she was, used to spit feathers at this sort of 'fighting a battle' talk.
Wilfred Frost says 'hope he fights back' following clip showing Jeremy Clarkson revealing he has an aggressive form of cancer. The 'fighting cancer' is insulting and ridiculous. It's a life-threatening disease not a row in a pub.
