The @British_Airways app is the definition of a one 9 available app. And somehow for the rest of us 3 9s is a given, 4 9s is the goal and 5 9s might be stretching it, BA have been 1 9 for years ... I'm actually impressed it can be this bad !

This @AngelaRayner tax affair stuff continues to renforce my belief that we need to massively overhaul and simplify the tax system. Of course any such simplication will have lots of winners and losers and be politically very hard, but we have an unplanned, "grown" mess now.

Pretty sure @UK_Daniel_Card will find this entertaining. Being told a security policy should deny passwords EVER being stored in RAM. Apparently including as the user types it in before the computer does anything with it. Guess passwords are off the menu boys ...

If you have a clean risk register because your company's culture scares people off from putting real risks on it, then you would be better with /dev/null being that register.

Just saw a man arguing with Heathrow security because they would let him take a car battery for a "classic car" in his hand baggage ...

For a moment I thought being able to run Llama 3.2 might have been my first actual Brexit Benefit ... ... but nope, not even that.

Someone let me write software that is going to be deployed on commercial aircraft ... ... don't panic though, it is just to put QR codes on the screen if the in flight entertainment system crashes to make it easier to diagnose why.

I like how my brain now has three patterns of Bokeh it can recognise. 1. Fast Lens Big Sensor Bokeh. 2. Smartphone Sized Sensor Depth Detection Bokeh. 3. AI Bokeh.

I was asked the other day why I hate DRM in "bought" content (think Blu Ray), but don't mind it for "rented" content (think Netflix). Microsoft answered that today with tomshardware.com/software/wi…

Inspired by @Gammitin, what is this unusual retro bit of memory I dug out a box last week. Way too obvious identifiers redacted.

As correctly identified, it’s a memory upgrade for the AWE64 sound card. Was really annoying as the AWE32 just took standard ram, but creative obviously wanted a cut and so made a special board. Enshitification was a thing even in the 90s.

Shit like this coming out of LLM's sure doesn't help prevent conspiracy theories. Out the box llama3.1-8b, self hosted, no fine tuning on anything.

Learning to type with a local physical keyboard and a US layout configured on the machine used to be a right of passage for geeks, but I fear this skill is being lost to the annals of time. Don't think we will miss it.

Yesterday I did a job interview for neteng/SRE job. One question was a simple optimisation prob. Offered 3 methods. 1. Spreadsheet. 2. Program. 3. Maths. They said don't care. Made function, diff'd, set to 0, solved. Correct !. But zero credit as they "didn't understand" .....

Saw @mc_hammersmith in Edinburgh last Friday (great show btw!), and then for work was editing an image of @FabianoCaruana when my wife came into my office. It took some work to convince her they weren't the same person. (btw: she was responsible for onomatopoeia, sorry !).

I'd like to remind some Americans that 18 U.S. Code § 373 exists. law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/… There are clear differences between UK and US law on this, but saying you can call for peoples murder with impunity in the US, as many people have said recently, is simply not true.

Fun in Network Engineering land. In a request for quotes ... 1. Our two datacentres are 240km apart. 2. We can give you < 0.3 milliseconds connectivity between them. Someone might have a problem with the compatibility of those two sentences.

I particularly enjoyed being told how we need to defund the BBC because of something ITV did ... Makes sense right ?
