Have now lived in Nairobi for 6 months and am yet to experience a power outage to rival the length of even stage 2 loadshedding, but sure (the grid is also 92% renewables).

Technology company Karooooo has warned that if the infrastructure failures hobbling South Africa are not addressed, the country will face a further drop in living standards that would spark a fresh wave of emigrations. | @SikonathiM fal.cn/3A95v

Quick reminder that the secret ballot underway in Tshwane will be replicated at presidential level (with a likely hung parliament) next year. At that point, we will have no idea how individuals elected to represent 30 000 people voted in an election to choose the next president.
Replying to @ewnreporter

No wonder @CheckersSA is eating into @WOOLWORTHS_SA's market share. Woolies products are only going to private school, not the Ivy League.

My social cohesion plan would be for government to stop allowing xenophobic vigilantes free-reign. Just an idea.

This is quite the national media schedule for the mayor of a municipality with 70 000 people (the smallest district municipality in SA).

Living in the UK during the 2019 election was a difficult and formative part of my Jewish identity. I can only imagine how tough it was for Jewish Labour activists. To stay and fight for the party is impressive, to win back the community’s trust is superlative.
Barnet results 🧵 This is a key Labour target, which the party failed to win in 2018 - largely due to failures over antisemitism One of the surprise losses from last time was West Hendon LAB have just GAINED all 3 seats from CON in West Hendon 1/n

@947 @PrimediaGroup Any comment on this?

Given Russian media suppression laws, publishing the work of a state media employee without sufficient caveats is editorial malpractice. @dailymaverick should know better.

Has any other @ICC member ever had a Chief Justice whose son had an international ODI cap?

The @sajewishreport continues to publish the work of an RT employee on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. They are shameful apologists for war crimes and SA Jewry should actively oppose them.

okay let’s not forget zimbabwe. the same zimbabwe that south africa watched degenerate and force thousands of its citizens into south africa, only for them to then be demonised and scapegoated in an increasingly xenophobic political environment
In arguably its most shameful foreign policy act since 1994, the South African government abstained from voting for a special resolution before the UN General Assembly on Wednesday. news24.com/news24/southafric…

Timing wise, this would be like launching part 2 of the “celebrities singing Imagine at home” video halfway through the press conference where they announced the Omicron variant. fourfourtwo.com/news/report-…

This abstention is deeply immoral and fundamentally shameful.
An overwhelming vote at the UN General Assembly to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine: 141 in favour; 5 against; 35 abstaining. (South Africa is among those that abstained.)

There won’t be a better opportunity than now to build a progressive voice against Putin’s far-right Russian imperialism. This isn’t just important for Ukraine, it’s important for Syria and the Sahel too.

It also means acknowledging the uncomfortable reality that it took a highly covered war in Europe rather than the countless war crimes in Syria and increasingly in the Sahel. Though confronting the structural factors behind why that is the case should still be a progressive goal.

It matters because:  1Efforts to isolate Putin’s regime need strong progressive support 2The moral legitimacy of progressive movements depends on it 3Sanctions have a cost on those imposing them and efforts are needed to ensure the most vulnerable don’t bear the burden
