15 JUNE 2001 - INDIA WITNESSED TUSNAMI AT THE CINEMA HALLS
Hindi cinema has witnessed many high-profile box-office clashes over the years, but even today, the biggest clash in its history is considered to be
#Gadar vs
#Lagaan. The two films went head-to-head at the box office, yet both emerged as timeless Bollywood classics. Today marks 25 years of that iconic showdown.
Lagaan received immense love and appreciation. Its remarkable storytelling, ambitious scale, unique theme, and exceptional execution propelled it all the way to the Oscars, earning a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. It was also a box-office success and, at the time, one of the most expensive Indian films ever made.
On the other hand, Gadar was met with harsh criticism from reviewers. Some critics even mockingly referred to it as “Gutter: Ek Prem Katha.” However, the film went on to create a box-office phenomenon that remains unmatched even 25 years later.
An astonishing 5.5 cr people watched Gadar in theatres. It collected ₹78 crore nett during an era when such numbers were unimaginable, earning more than double the box-office collections of Lagaan. To this day, no Hindi film has managed to cross even 4.5 cr footfalls after Gadar.
While Lagaan is widely regarded by critics and audiences alike as one of the greatest classics of modern Indian cinema, Gadar was embraced by the masses and became, after Sholay, arguably the biggest mass blockbuster in the history of Indian cinema.
Two films. Two completely different journeys. One unforgettable clash that changed Hindi cinema forever. 25 years later, both Lagaan and Gadar continue to stand tall as landmarks of Indian filmmaking.
