Students who see feedback before their grade become more proficient learners, outperforming their peers by a full two-thirds of a letter grade on future assignments. “Systematically delaying the grade release in favor of providing feedback first…may increase students’ engagement with feedback,” the authors of a 2021 study write, and thus give students the time and space to grapple with their strengths and weaknesses.
