Dennis Ritchie created C in the early 1970s without Google, Stack Overflow, GitHub, or any AI ( Claude, Cursor, Codex) assistant. - No VC funding. - No viral launch. - No TED talk. - Just two engineers at Bell Labs. A terminal. And a problem to solve. He built a language that fit in kilobytes. 50 years later, it runs everything. Linux kernel. Windows. macOS. Every iPhone. Every Android. NASA’s deep space probes. The International Space Station. > Python borrowed from it. > Java borrowed from it. > JavaScript borrowed from it. If you have ever written a single line of code in any language, you did it in Dennis Ritchie’s shadow. He died in 2011. The same week as Steve Jobs. Jobs got the front pages. Ritchie got silence. This Legend deserves to be celebrated.

The SUN Sparc Station IPX was code named Hobbes, and came with a cat silkscreen on the mainboard. So after getting it running again over Christmas I had @claudeai help me build a simple C based api server to serve up Hobbes quotes at hobbes.jpaul.io

Purchased at ComputerFest in Dayton Ohio around 2000. I didn’t first get it running until probably 2010, and then it went into storage again until last month. I fixed the nvram battery and purchased a new 10baset adapter. It got a 2fb scsi hdd and openbsd 4 back in 2010 :)

Last month my intern asked for help with a Kubernetes error. He was stuck on a YAML file. He looked desperate. I make $275,000 a year. I haven't written a line of code since 2017. I don't even know what a "pod" is. But I didn't tell him that. I leaned back in my Herman Miller chair. I said, "Stop trying to code. Start prompting." I told him to paste the error into ChatGPT. He did. The AI told him to delete the cluster. He did. Production went down instantly. The CEO called me screaming. I didn't panic. I told the CEO we were "testing our disaster recovery protocols." He was impressed by my foresight. I got a bonus. The intern got fired. Innovation requires sacrifice. Just not mine.
