Fair for EVs? Lmao… how? We had purchased a car a little more than a month ago and we paid regular price for the plates. I don’t know how this 150K birr for plates happened, I can only speak from experience. I know some people think the 100K-200K (depending on the car sell price) they pay for ጉዳይ አስፈፃሚ is just for the person or plates but it almost always includes the 2% sales tax the government imposes on the buyer. So for a 1M birr car, 20K is expected at the minimum before the other administrative fees!
Also this RFID chip and embedded QR stuff is absolute nonsense. The plate numbers are unique by themselves. In Ethiopia, a plate number is already “married” to a car. A car carries the same plate number for its entire life unless the purpose is changed (private to business). This already exists.
The transport authority already has all the info they need if they want to modernize penalties and fines. For any given plate number, they know the owner, the car make and model, color, engine number and frame number (VIN). A good proof of this is the new parking system. Parking attendant take your phone number and start the session with the plate number. When you’re about to pay, you’ll see the car owner’s name.
Plate numbers don’t need to be fancy or sophisticated. Almost all of the world just uses simple aluminum plates with a reflective coating. We have one of the easier systems since plates aren’t owned by people and rather they’re part of the car. This makes management and records super easy.
I am yet to hear a solid justification for the new plates altogether! Custom plates? We already had a limited customization. Out of order numbers were available for purchase. There is a reason why you see some fancy cars with unique plate numbers. Even if they wanted to expand on that, it would have been possible without needing to introduce a new format.
Our Honest take on Ethiopia’s new “ETH” plates and why they cost of 56,000 ETB might not be that high and what you’re actually paying for. 🇪🇹
