šŸ‹ Today, I had the privilege of welcoming kids from Northeast Michigan to the Capitol to testify in support of my bill, HB 6007. This legislation would ensure that children can operate lemonade stands without needing licenses, permits, fees, or facing penalties anywhere in Michigan. #MILeg #mipol #lemonade Here's their full testimony: See less

Rep. Cavitt testifies in committee, puts the squeeze on governments regulating lemonade stands FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 11, 2026 State Rep. Cam Cavitt today gave testimony in front of the House Regulatory Reform Committee on his plan to protect children running lemonade stands in the state of Michigan. Joining him were local children from Presque Isle County, who were notified by their local health department that if wanted to sell lemonade, they would need to pay $57 bi-weekly and jump through other hoops. ā€œWhen they brought this issue to my attention, it left a sour taste in my mouth,ā€ said Cavitt (R-Cheboygan). ā€œThese young entrepreneurs weren't asking for special treatment, they were simply trying to make the best of lemons and learn a little about hard work along the way.ā€ Cavitt was joined in testimony by the Mielke family from Posen, who were being forced to pay excessive recurring fees for selling lemonade at a local farmer’s market. The Mielkes brought this issue to Cavitt’s attention, and they worked to find a real legislative solution. ā€œEarly this year, we went to Cam Cavitt’s Coffee Hour in Alpena,ā€ explained Ethan Mielke. ā€œI told him about the fees my brothers would have to pay and gave him letters we wrote. He said that he would help us figure out how to change that law. We hope this bill can come to a vote and pass so that other kids like us do not have to pay fees to sell lemonade.ā€ House Bill 6007 would remove restrictions on lemonade stands operated by minors that earn less than $5,000 annually. Currently, regulations and exemptions for lemonade stands vary significantly across the state, with some local health departments requiring operators to obtain a permit and pay licensing fees. ā€œWe should never discourage our youth from engaging in entrepreneurship,ā€ Cavitt said. ā€œThis is a common-sense reform. Children selling lemonade is not the same as a commercial food operation, and the state has to understand that difference. We need to let our kids have the opportunities to learn the basics of business and civic responsibility, and regulators need to step out of the way.ā€ #mileg #mipol #lemonade See less

Rep. Cavitt Introduces Plan to Protect Children Serving LemonadešŸ‹ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 21, 2026 State Rep. Cam Cavitt this week introduced a plan that would protect the rights of children seeking to run lemonade stands across Michigan. ā€œThis puts a sour taste in my mouth,ā€ said Cavitt (R-Cheboygan). ā€œThe issue was brought to my attention by children in my community. They had a lemonade stand, and they were told by our local health department that they could no longer operate unless they paid a $57 license fee biweekly. These kids reached out to me asking for legislative change. After working with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, we’ve found a solution. These changes would put in place a standardized exemption for lemonade stands so our kids can serve lemonade without fear of getting the squeeze from the health department.ā€ House Bill 6007 would eliminate restrictions on running a lemonade stand if it is operated by a minor and generates less than $5,000 in yearly revenue. Currently, state exemptions and regulations regarding lemonade stands differ wildly, and some health departments don’t allow them without a license fee. In doing research for this bill, Cavitt discovered other existing failures in the law, including the fact that Michigan car dealerships technically cannot serve coffee without a food license. This was also fixed in the legislation. The bill will be referred to committee for further review. #mileg #mipol #michigan

Last week, we passed a plan to protect children from abuse and help Michigan families. Thank you @ParisHilton for sharing your story and leading on this all across the country, and thank you @RepCavitt for bringing this plan to the House. Michigan’s children need protection, and we took a strong step this week to keep them safe. Ā  The Humane & Ethical Adolescent Transportation plan is important to safeguard our children and make sure they get the best care possible. We will never stop fighting for our children and making sure they grow up safe and protected. I’m glad we were able to get this done together!
Inspired by @repmatthall's HEAT plan, so I’ve written my own: The Humane & Ethical Adolescent Transportation plan also known as #HB5514 by @repcavitt that will ensure youth are treated with dignity and care during transport to treatment - something I was not afforded as a teen. Looking forward to seeing this move forward tomorrow and help protect Michigan’s youthšŸ’™ I’ve loved spending time in Michigan (my husband's family is from there), and it would mean so much to see this state lead on protecting kids #HB5514 #MILeg #MIPol @MI_Republicans @MIHouseDems

Proud that my bill passed the Michigan House today. Children being transported to treatment deserve dignity, safety, and compassion. This is an important first step toward making Michigan a safer place for all children! It was great working with @repcavitt and @repmatthall, and I look forward to working with @winniebrinks to move it through the Senate and with @govwhitmer to sign it into law #HB5514 #MILeg #MIPol

ā€¼ļøCheboygan Dam Update Currently crews continue to closely monitor water levels at the Cheboygan Dam. Over the past few days, levels on the Cheboygan River have remained steady at 21 inches below the top of the dam. With rain forecasted in the near future, this remains a concerning situation. Should the water rise to 12 inches below the top, an emergency action plan is ready to be implemented to protect public safety. I’m glad that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and EGLE are taking this situation seriously and deploying teams to help shore up the dam. The Cheboygan County Emergency Management team, along with State Police resources, are also in place and ready to respond if needed. #cheboygan #dam #Michigan

Proud to support Michigan’s Youth Transportation Act #HB5514 by @repcavitt. This bill will stop youth transport companies from unnecessarily restraining children and from conducting late-night pickups that cause so much PTSD. Looking forward to testimony, in Families and Veterans Committee this week! #HB5514 #MILeg #MIPol @MI_Republicans @MIHouseDems

The mainline item here: Whitmer’s office says Trump agreed to send additional funds to help with ice storm recovery — something state officials had pleaded for to no avail when DHS & FEMA were under Kristi Noem’s leadership.
