There is an intense debate around consciousness, intelligence, and the tendency to anthropomorphise LLMs and AI systems. My impression is that beyond the philosophical questions, reducing modern LLMs to just probabilistic systems may not be sufficient to explain the behaviours they exhibit, while comparing them directly to human intelligence may be equally misleading. Perhaps we should simply accept that a new form of intelligence is emerging from these systems, one that arises from the mathematics underlying them and need not be compared to human intelligence.
