Currently in the introductory sections. Quite refreshing how the author tries to stay true to ground realities and independent observation without the weight of conformity

How on earth are policies being prepared today? A month ago, coal gasification was announced and I had asked if India’s high-ash coal actually be gasified at commercial scale, or if this is an engineering gamble (see my article at sharmila.substack.com/p/indi…) ...1/2

For more than 2 decades MEA maintained a dazzling online library on India's journey from 1948-49 to 1999. From Nehru to Vajpayee. From Indira Gandhi to IK Gujral. The collection has vanished without any explanation. Great loss for academics, journalists general people worldwide.
Brajesh Mishra's remarks on '74 n-test, Indira-Mujib Declaration of March 19, 1972; birthday of MEA; Guests list at 1955 Bandung conference and many more gems of India's diplomatic past probably lost forever as mealib.nic.in remains down and out without repair.

Similar conclusions about carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies in India at a CCS conference held in Bengaluru in March. Speakers were academics with industry exposure like from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research
Contrary to all the hype and PR via media headlines, the coal secretary is saying it very clearly that technology doesn't exist for creating gas from high-ash coal that India produces. It is a non-starter.

Karnataka govt has approved free bus passes for all school & college students travelling on buses operated by KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC and KKRTC. Govt will bear an estimated cost of Rs 286.08 crore for the scheme & an additional Rs 15 crore towards processing fees & accident relief fund charges. Students can apply through Seva Sindhu portal. Existing eligibility norms will continue. Fees collected from students who obtained passes before the scheme's implementation will be refunded within 15 days. The benefit will also extend to border-area students studying across state boundaries @tdkarnataka @KSRTC_Journeys @BMTC_BENGALURU

At Bonn climate negotiations, UK and EU are harping on keeping 1.5°C within reach when, at this point, the physics of the target is simply impossible. The world is fast on track to breach 1.5°C. Wealthy countries are also off-track with responsibilities to keep 2°C within reach
Quelle surprise: my comment on the Govt's latest climate commitment gov.uk/government/news/energ… is out of step, at least publicly, with many colleagues: sciencemediacentre.org/exper… With expert whitewash on one side & charlatans on the other, an honest climate debate stands no chance.

#SB64 In their opening statements, developing countries stressed how the Bonn agenda must strengthen implementation through adequate finance. Many also raised concerns about unilateral trade measures undermining international cooperation. Full report▶️ tinyurl.com/skxcw5kr

Our 2026 Indicators of Global Climate Change paper is out! We find that the human-induced warming was 1.37C in 2025, and the current rate of warming is 0.27C per decade, on track to firmly pass 1.5C in about four years.

The Little Boy is here. El Nino has set in, officially. 63% chance of a very-strong El Nino, as per the latest forecast from NOAA (noaa.gov/news-release/el-nin…) So, what does a 'super' El Nino mean for India? Laying out the risks in this @livemint Long Story Key takeaways: 1. A strong El Nino persisting through March next year means the summer of 2027 could get very very hot and dry (see latest NOAA chart). Drinking water shortages in pockets is a strong possibility. 2. There is no perfect correlation between the strength of El Nino and the quantum of monsoon rainfall deficit- only in 3 out of 6 strong El Nino years since 1951, did the Indian monsoon record a deficit of 10% or more (see chart1)- so all is not bleak yet 4. Distribution of monsoon rainfall will be critical for Kharif crops- but resilience of Indian agriculture to deficit rains has improved greatly over the past few decades (see chart2)- but be ready to pay more for vegetables, cooking oils etc 5. Keep a close watch on Indian Ocean Dipole, currently in a neutral state, which can offset some of the negative impacts of a very strong El Nino 6. As a senior scientist said: El Nino is like a terrific fast bowler. But much will depend on the pitch it bowls on. So, fingers crossed! Read more: livemint.com/economy/el-nino…

This is a good thread to make people understand why journalism is different from 'content'. Journalism is original reporting based on primary sources (like interviews from the ground and documents) which then gets independently verified by at least one editor.
There’s a lot of punditry being thrown at me for calling out Desi Studios and the way they plagiarised my story on Jayanandan. Don’t gatekeep facts. Don’t be a crybaby. Duniya is changing, why don’t you move on. You get the drift. Here's a 🧵useful to anyone who thinks that story, the one Desi Studios lifted sentence by sentence, wrote itself.

For something to qualify as 'content', on the other hand, all it takes is someone saying something on video. In an era rife with content creation, the least people can do is learn to differentiate between journalism and content
