The Forest Man Of Assam
Jadav Payeng, widely known as the “Forest Man of Assam,” has spent over four decades transforming a lifeless sandbar into a flourishing 1,360-acre forest. His journey began in 1979 when, as a teenager, he witnessed the damage caused by erosion and extreme heat on wildlife along the Brahmaputra River in Assam. He found hundreds of Snakes dead on a barren sandbar ~ killed by heat because there were no trees for shade. Moved by what he saw, he began planting trees ~ starting with bamboo ~ one sapling at a time.
Over the years, his dedication gave birth to the Molai Forest, now a rich ecosystem that supports wildlife like Bengal Tigers, Indian Rhinoceros, and even herds of over 100 Elephants.
In February 2026, he was honored with the Assam Nakshatra Award for his extraordinary contribution to environmental conservation. Despite challenges, he remained committed to his mission and continues to advocate for protecting nature.
His story proves that even a single person, with patience and purpose, can restore balance to nature and inspire a greener future.
Jadav, you are a true hero 🙏.
